Review of The Sweeney (2012) by Gary B — 20 Sep 2012
Circumstances have caused my opinion of this to be very harsh - the tragic killing of two female police officers, here in the UK, have lead to a lack of appetite for this film.
This was (and should have stayed) a TV show from back in the 70's in the UK and is remembered fairly well. It was a nice change to see a UK based plot be about the cops rather than the gangsters, with Ray Winstone the primary focus of the cast. That is, however, the end of the good things about this misjudged attempt at making something weighty...
The dialogue, plot and characters are a mess of clichà (C)s and stereotypes. The gunplay is childish (the "Sweeney" have supposedly just had combat training, but still can't hit the side of a barn!), no attempt at character development and I was frankly, bored. Most of the plot can be guessed, with no originality.
Just to make it worse, Hayley Atwell (who is very pretty) and Winstone's "sex" scenes are excruciating - he is, at 55 to her 30, old enough to be her dad!
Avoid, I want my 2 hours back.
