Review of The Swarm (2024) by Bertobellamy — 07 Aug 2021
'The Swarm' is not precisely horror, but what this family undergoes is truly terrifying: a mother willing to "bleed herself out" to provide for her loved ones — a living nightmare for the middle class.
I really liked the way director Just Philippot and his team masked the lack of budget. But the best thing is the sound design; the constant buzzing of the grasshoppers feels menacing almost all the time, auguring an ill-fated ending.
Also, great acting from Suliane Brahim and Sofian Khammesas — the mother and daughter —; their conflict eventually turns into the heart of the film. Unfortunately, there are little surprises here, and it feels like the screenwriters wanted to tell too much in so little time.
