Review of The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) by Nintenderek — 08 Apr 2023

To start, this movie does not hold up well on it's own if you have not played the games. I think most people who are big Mario fans will really enjoy it, but if you aren't a Mario fan, nor do you have children, this probably isn't the movie for you.

It is a high quality movie full of references and easter eggs, but finding those references and easter eggs is a huge part of the fun of the movie, perhaps too big a portion of the movie. I think everyone involved put in great performances with special mentions to Anya Taylor-Joy and Jack Black who were both particularly good.

I think the movie could have made better use of Jack Black's musical skills though. Bowser does a little bit of music, but not nearly as much as I would have expected for a part played by Jack Black.

The story was about what I'd expect from Mario. It wasn't anything particularly special, but good enough to get the job done. The music was really good. The animation was fantastic. All in all, I thought this was a good movie for Mario fans, but not so great for anyone else.
