Review of The Summit of the Gods (2021) by Bertobellamy — 01 Dec 2021
If you're into alpinism or climbing, then you're in for a treat; if not, you'll enjoy this anime-inspired film about giving in your life to something you love.
'The Summit of the Gods' reminded me a lot of 'I Lost My Body,' and not just because of the animation style — the details are amazing! — but because of the introspective themes.
The story follows a Japanese journalist in search of the truth about who reached Everest's summit first. When he encounters an elusive climber who may have a lead, he joins him in his next ascent.
Although the film has a lot of inspiring and breathtaking moments, some others are very dark and tense. Still, it makes a really good job at showing why climbers risk their lives with no apparent purpose.
The only problem is that the mixing of two timelines makes the plot a little convoluted, but nothing to worry about. Just keep going and you'll be rewarded.
Forget about 'Everest,' 'Vertical Limit' or even 'Free Solo,' this is the ultimate mountaineering film.
