Review of The Sum of Us (1994) by Anna B — 22 Mar 2013
I didn't like Jeff's love interest. We know almost nothing about him outside of his coming out story, and whenever he talks to Jeff he comes off as a bit of a jerk. And I feel that way because, to repeat, we know nothing about this guy outside of his sexual identity and his job.
If there is one things the movie could've done, it is expand its characters. Movie, you don't have the constraints of the stage, though the stage is capable of some wonderful characters (and sometimes less is more), so you should utilize the larger scope.
Also, this being a movie, some things should've been adapted or changed from the original play to fit the new format. The characters don't need to break the 4th wall and tell me how they feel.
I should be able to infer it from how the scene is framed and shot, the acting, the music, the colors and everything else. As is, I got a pretty decent play on TV, with good actors (for the most part) and OK music.
I'm never going to say no to Russell Crowe in booty-shorts.
