Review of The Sum of All Fears (2002) by Chad G — 11 Jan 2008
This movie was released post 9/11, and since Hollywood didn't want to inflame or upset anyone in this over-sensitive time(and my wife lost work colleagues in 9/11 in case anyone asks), the bad guys in this adaptation were changed from the book's combined Islamic- East German-disgruntled Native American alliance(if you have read the Tom Clancy novel you will see what I mean) to neo-Nazis forcing war between Russia and America by detontaing a nuke at the Superbowl while the Persident attends.
Overall, this movie version works a treat! Thrilling, thought-provoking and somehow relevant. Ben Affleck plays a younger version of Jack Ryan, a CIA analyst who stumbles upon the neafrious plot and who is the only person who can avert World War 3 .
. . James Cromwell plays the US President and you get a standout performance by Morgan Freeman as the CIA director who is mentoring the young Ryan. One scene to watch for is an attack on a US carrier by a squadron of Russian Backfire bombers - brilliantly executed.
In my view, just forget the negative reviews and watch for yourself, you might be pleasantly surprised.
