Review of The Sugarland Express (1974) by Justin J — 07 Jul 2008
Steven Spielbergâ??s first feature film is also his most self-conscious and least assured. In being more overtly self-conscious of his developing skills and less on characterization and plot flow, Sugarland Express feels more like an experimental foray into Hollywood cinema than it does a true narrative.
Still, I would still be lying if I said I didnâ??t enjoy watching Spielberg play with his newer, bigger toys. That he would move from this to Jaws only a year later is a real testament to his innate talent. In the end, this should be remembered as a rather humble yet wholly auspicious debut for Hollywoodâ??s most talented director.
