Review of The Stunt Man (1980) by Tristan F — 14 Feb 2008
I had read about this cult movie, particularly Pauline Kael's glowing review of it in 1980 where it died at the box office. A fugitive from the law (Steve Railsback) runs onto the set of a movie and accidentally causes the death of a stunt-man.
The director of the WW1 picture (Peter O'Toole) strikes a bargain - in order to have the location for three more days, he will hide the fugitive and cast him as the stunt-man on set. A puzzle about movie-making and paranoia, which is hip and funny, full of unique, loopy touches.
However, it also works as an analogy to the Vietnam conflict in the relationship between Stunt Man and Director. Seriously one of Peter O'Toole's best performances, constantly being lifted by a crane or delivered by a helicopter, Film Director As God played with relish and wit.
