Review of The Stuff (1985) by Lisa S — 03 Jul 2012
This is a typical mid-grade 80s horror-comedy. A delicious liquid is found and soon marketed across the world. It becomes ubiquitous very quickly, soon pushing out the iced cream and other frozen goodies manufacturers.
While most people think it is the greatest thing since, well, iced cream, there are a few who are not so sure. One of these is a young boy who makes it his mission to destroy all the the Stuff he can get his hands on.
Of course this gets him in trouble, but brings him to the attention of an adult investigating the Stuff's origins. Discovered are secret dealings between the manufacturer and the FDA (including murder) in order to bring it to market.
Those who know the secret that the Stuff rots your brain and body are in danger of being killed by the powerful Stuff lobby. A good allegory about all the "fake food" which started to enter our grocery stores in the late 70s/early 80s (and now dominate the shelves).
Watch this in conjunction with "Street Trash" "Basket Case" "Brain Damage" "Combat Shock" or even "Slime City" and "Society.".
