Review of The Street with No Name (1948) by Luke W — 16 Mar 2011
This is a semi-forgotten noir with an interesting premise. An undercover cop infiltrates a gang that frames innocent civilians for their crimes by planting their Social Security cards at the scene. When the cop learns of the gang's next heist, he alerts the police, putting himself at risk for the firefight that will undoubtedly ensue.
I had never heard of Mark Stevens, but he gives a believable performance, as does Richard Widmark as the gang boss and John McIntire as Stevens' connection to the outside world. The film begins with a documentary-esque feel, with narration about the nation's crime wave, but once it settles down into its fictional setting, I found myself drawn in more and more, as I do with a plot as tense as this one,.
