Review of The Strangers (2011) by Shayla M — 12 Jun 2011
Although the end plays like some confused and melodramatic slasher, "The Strangers" throughout is more a psychological thriller - a creepy atmosphere, generated by significant and sustained terror, with no means of explanation.
It's tension holds the audience for the whole 90 minutes, and doesn't let go until the end. Bertino, in his directing debut, has hit on a fear inside audiences of something greater than any axe-wielding madman - the fear of the comfort and safety of the natural being invaded; if you're not safe in your own home, where are you safe?
