Review of The Strangers (2008) by Jack S — 18 Dec 2012
46%!!!!! This film felt like a short film that had been adapted to a feature. It was shot really well, the plot was mysterious and had two brilliant lead actors at the helm. The plot begins with a young couple driving out to a cabin with an awkward atmosphere which you can't quite put your finger on.
.. their not so romantic get away is then disturbed by three uninvited STRANGERS. This film had elements of a classic 60's horror with pull focus shots of the strangers stalking them around the house without them knowing (very Halloween-esque).
What I really loved about this film is they striped everything back and made a horror the way they use to be made.... the killer has no real motive. If you look at three of the most famous villains in cinema history.
.. The Terminator, Michael Myers and Christopher Nolan's Joker.... each of them at heart had no real motive for the crime's and murders they were committing. A killer who can't be reasoned with, has no passion or mercy is a thousand times more horrifying then some mutant who wears a hockey mask and is pissed because some slutty teens let him drown.
Like most films in the modern era.... the good ones which stick to its guns artistically slip under the radar. Watch this film and you will not be disappointed.
