Review of The Straight Story (1999) by D M — 06 Nov 2008
Of course the film is slow! A really old guy travelling for miles on a lawnmower, what'd you expect? Just kidding :) I love this film. It's a beautiful portrait of a man's view on his own mortality and the need to mend past differences.
Along his journey he meets many different people, and with his low-key wisdom and kindness, he makes an impact on all of them. Richard Farnsworth was absolutely perfect for this film, he moved me to tears many times.
This is absolutely not your typical David Lynch-film, but it is still very Lynch. The angles, closeups, lighting, the beginning and also the ending resembling some of his not so heartwarming films :).
