Review of The Story of Qiu Ju (1992) by Deepak M — 22 Nov 2009
A revealing look at various strata of Chinese society in the early 90s. Though this film shows the Chinese bureaucracy and judicial system in action, Indians would easily be able to identify themselves with the story, having themselves been endowed with a complicated bureaucracy and a slow judicial system.
However, what's revealing is the extent to which people (even ordinary peasants) go, just to "save face" in Chinese society. This "saving face" phenomenon also helps us understand some of the reasons for China's conduct in the international community.
