A fantastic film that has clearly inspired soderberg's 'ocean's' films, as well as, of all things, 'ferris bueller's day off.' like 'ferris,' 'le roman d'un tricheur (diary of a cheat) uses direct camera address, as well as extensive voiceover in a playful actor/audience repartee.

it is essentially a silent film re-purposed as a talkie by making use of hilarious, meandering narration by the lead character. it also serves as a showcase for the many talents of director sacha guitry, who plays the lead, does the narration, transforms into a multitude of personas, and also displays incredible slight of hand skills with both cards and coins.
