Review of The Stoning of Soraya M. (2009) by Breanna V — 28 Jun 2009
To say the story line is gripping as an understatement. There is perhaps 3 min of English, the rest is Farsi with subtitles - I may have missed 3 of them. The ease with which that system is corruptible, and the illogic used to justify Soraya's murder by the men of the village is worse that reprehensible and appalling. I went in expecting to compare it to the "Passion of the Christ" (obvious) and added "The Diary of Anne Frank".
This is a tough movie to watch and you will learn more practical details than you hoped or needed to know. But this movie does prove that with an important, compelling and vital story, the audience will leave with a different view of the world and of themselves.
