Review of The Stoning of Soraya M. (2009) by Ching T — 30 Jun 2009
The fact that this movie is based on an ACTUAL true story, and that there are probably still countless death by stoning of innocent women caught in a justice system skewed against them is absolutely HORRIFIC! I read an interview of one of the main actresses who claimed to have watched a real live stoning of two teenage boys (18 & 19) who's only real crime was being homosexual.
THAT real live stoning took 1.5 hours, whereas the stoning in this movie was approximately 7 minutes. Those 7 minutes, shown in GRAPHIC DETAIL, were very necessary to garner moral outrage from the international community.
This practice has GOT to stop for goodness sakes! I was definitely NOT the only one in the audience shrieking and skirmishing in my seat. I think the timed release of this movie was not accidental given what's going on in modern Iran.
I'm now hot after the book this movie is based on to learn more about the actual events that occurred. I wholeheartedly recommend this movie because we Americans should not turn a blind eye to all the horrors and injustices that are occurring outside our borders, but I warn you this is very difficult to watch.
