Review of The Stoning of Soraya M. (2009) by Julie S — 10 Jan 2012
Story (sadly true) of an Iranian lady stoned to death in the 80's by her village (husband, father and two sons included) so that her pisswipe of a husband could marry a 14 year old girl and not have to pay to support two families.
He apparently found it easier to make up a lie about his wife cheating on him (no evidence necessary) so as to send her to her death by stoning amidst villager chants of 'die you cunt' and 'god is great'.
Truly sick shit. Always find it hard to rate films based on true stories.. Are you rating the film or the events themselves considering the two are forever entwined? In the end I go with how the film makes me feel, and though this made me feel god-awful to be part of the human race, it at least had me feeling something, and surely films are there to stir our emotions? Beautifully shot too (at times obv).
