Review of The Stoning of Soraya M. (2009) by Brad S — 14 Jan 2012
The outcome of this movie should be no surprise since the title itself gives away the ending. It should also come as no surprise that the Stoning of Soraya M. isn't so much about a story as it is about an issue.
And that of course is the treatment of women - particulary in the middle east. So it should come as no surprise that this particular movie lacks nuance - which some critics have said makes the movie flawed.
Cyrus Nowrasteh is trying to say that stoning is brutal - I didn't watch this film and relish the violence - in fact my wife couldn't even watch the whole thing - but sometimes the visualization of the brutality brings home the reality of the situation.
Movies make moral statements all the time why people would argue against the moral statement being made in this movie is beyond me - nuance is not necessary to make this a good movie or a compelling story.
