Review of The Stöned Age (1994) by David S — 27 Jun 2014
At first glance at the cover art, The Stoned Age seems like a Dazed and Confused knock off. Released a year after Richard Linklater's film also set in the late 1970s, it's an easy comparison to make. However, The Stoned Age is more of a throwback to the sex comedies of the early 1980s.
The story revolves around Joe and Hubbs, two stoners trying to hook up with some 'fine chicks' in a town virtually devoid of them. After hearing about two girls from out of town through the grapevine, we follow Joe and Hubbs on their quest to hook up. Along the way, they run into friends/rivals who are on a similar quest.
It's not the most complex plot, but it really doesn't have to be. The film has a charm that separates itself the admittedly more complex Dazed. The film shines the brightest with the chemistry between it's two leads. They bring a lot to what would normally be standard sex comedy fair. The comedy is also elevated by supporting actors like Clifton Collins Jr, China Kantner and Kevin Kilner. Kilner steals all his scenes as Officer Dean, a cop who does his best to identify with punks he's busting, sharing his many nick names he accumulated in his own youth.
All in all, The Stoned Age is an enjoyable throwback comedy. If you skipped it at the video store back in the 90s, you owe it to yourself to check it out 20 years later.
