Review of The Sting (1973) by David S — 22 Jun 2010
One of the all time great films and it stands up to repeated viewing even if you know the twist (or should I say twists)! Newman and Redford are obviously loving what they're doing and it helps to make you really care about their characters. Shaw is a great villain too.
After Sundance and this it's a shame the pair didn't do anyore films but it leaves us with two cinema classics and their image togther was never tarnished so I guess you shouldn't complain.
If you haven't seen this before then you might be able to guess the ending (after all it's been copied numerous times since, most recently in the BBC show 'Hustle') but these guys bring such class to the proceedings that you'll still enjoy the ride.
Add some great support from some brilliant character actors, art direction that send you stright back to the jazz era (the whole thing looks great) and Hamlish's exquisite versions of some of Joplin's classics that you won't be able to get out of your head afterwards and all in all you have one of the best films of the 70's and possibly of all time. I love it!
