Review of The Sting (1973) by Ryan Gibbons — 26 Sep 2010
Robert Redford was a pretty mediocre actor. This movie has its moments of greatness but its followed by moments of failure. There are several scenes that are insignificant to the story, and could have easily been taken out.
I don't know why but I felt cheated at the end of the film, its got terrible build up to a disappointing ending that is not surprising one bit. Paul Newman really did not have to do much except look like a bad ass, and he was one of the best at doing so.
This film is pretty good but I would give it a 7.5 out of ten. It's a really slow moving story which is okay but the story can;t hold up itself. I am so tired of characters named Doyle!, just knock it off!Rear window,Polar shift,25th hour,on the waterfront, all with characters named Doyle, and that's a very short list that I forgot to include both French Connections in, Next time I hear the name Doyle in a movie, I vow to turn off the film no matter what.
I know this film would not have been considered a cliche back then, but it is now and it makes it dated. Enough with Doyle! Fuck Doyle!
