Review of The Sting (1973) by Djangolulu S — 15 Aug 2011
"The Sting" was nominated for ten Oscars, won seven, including Best Picture, and is yet another classic, critcally acclaimed film that made me think...."Why?".
There is nothing truly bad about it, except being really slow moving, very long, and not all that entertaining. I mean, the acting is fine, the story is ok if you're into this sort of thing, but overall, I found absolutely nothing great about this film at all except maybe the cinematography and costumes.
No doubt, films like "Ocean's 11" are FAR better at executing the heist drama than this film is. In short, Robert Redford and Paul Newman join forces to destroy a racketeer after the death of a close friend. With a choppy story and somewhat uneven stroytelling, the storyline pushes forward just far too slowly and, as so many movies from the early seventies and earlier, acting which is far too dramatic.
I am glad I can finally say I saw this film, but like so many others, I cannot begin to imagine why people hold it in such high esteem. It is merely ok at best.
