Review of The Stepford Wives (2004) by Matthew M — 05 Feb 2012
Regardless of how it stands up against the original, it does something different that most remakes don't - it dares to take the chilling premise and turn it into a humorous and atmospheric film, applying to a more modern and consumerist audience.
Frank Oz, and Rudnick his screenwriter, create a balance between the tense and camp, and it just works; it never feels problematic or rushed, strained or uneven - it's just pure, flimsy entertainment, in the best sense of the phrase.
All performances are perfect, especially Kidman, who balances nervous breakdown, anger and confusion brilliantly.
