Review of The Stepford Wives (2004) by Crystal B — 07 Apr 2010
I never saw the original version of this movie but this is more a comedy than a drama (with dashes of sci-fi thrown in) and it's all the better for it. Nicole Kidman gives a great performance as a Manhattan executive who loses her job and moves to the beautiful suburb of Stepford with her husband Matthew Broderick, only to discover that all their female neighbors are a bit too perfect, lacking any semblance of personality or character, and completely subservient to the men. There's an old saying that "Your imperfections are what make you beautiful." Obviously the men of Stepford have never quite grasped that concept. Nicole Kidman shines as the bewildered Joanna as does Bette Midler as the hilarious Bobbie.
A delightful spoof of the battle of the sexes, I thought, and with a quite clever twist towards the end of the film with Glenn Close and Christopher Walken.
