"The Stepfather" is one of the few instances where I watched the remake for the film before I had ever seen the original. I hated the remake, as it was histrionic in a way that wasn't even entertaining, and the plot had holes big enough to drive a truck through.

Most of all, it was not a fun or entertaining viewing, and the few moments where I was entertained had everything to do with how awful the film was (so bad it was amusing, etc., etc.). Now that I have finally seen the original, it is even more deplorable that the remake was so weak, as the original is a fun, fun movie, with a excellent lead performance by Terry O'Quinn as the eponymous character of the film.

Theres some key things that go unexplained (the movie kindof starts with the stepfather already firmly established in the family), and it is certainly campy at times, but good direction and O'Quinn's great performance elevate the film to higher ground.

The gore isn't excessive in this film, but the moments of violence are edited and presented in a way that made them unnerving, showing a talent for horror directing beyond just repulsing the viewer.

A true gem from the 80's horror wave, and one of those select few that can get under the outer layer of your skin and really unnerve you.
