Review of The Station Agent (2003) by Abilash G — 30 Mar 2008
This movie is about a dwarf (Fin) that inherits some land in lonely New Jersey and goes there intending to live in solitude. But of course, life intervenes. Fin finds that he can't escape from humanity as his neighbors constantly reach out to him.
Each character has his own loneliness, or her own misery, but what saves them all are the ties that bind. Although it may not sound so, the movie is riveting: The pain and longing of each character is quite gracefully depicted.
And there's humor and unspoken sexuality; watch as different girls, for different reasons, make advances on Fin, much to the other male character's bemusement. Oddly enough, I think The Station Agent would work pretty well as a date movie: It has a dark undercurrent but is ultimately uplifting in its examination of the beauty of human bonds.
