Review of The Station Agent (2003) by Jonathan H — 25 May 2008
I thought for a second if this movie deserved a full 5 stars, because there are no major events or particular moments where something very profound or amazing happens. But when I pondered on it more, I realized this movie is all about the undercurrent and the thought of the characters that go unspoken.
You are constantly trying to get inside these character's heads. Dinklage has an incredible presence without saying much of anything, and his interactions and conversations with the other characters, while brief and simply-spoken, invite the viewer to be curious about what he is really feeling.
There are other moments, most specifically between him and some women, where the movie could become just like any other cliche film of its type, but it only flirts with those cliches to deepen the complexity of the characters, and does not use them or exploit them just to satisfy an audience.
It has a simple charm and originality to it that cannot be dismissed, and for what it is...a simple movie about three very different people finding peace together...it is perfect.
