Review of The Station Agent (2003) by Aren B — 26 Jan 2009
Tom McCarthy's films seem completely preoccupied with loneliness. This loneliness dominates the entirety of both his films: their shots, their performances, their music and their narrative. In "The Station Agent", we are brought into the world of lonely man who merely soaks in that loneliness, a man whose only focus in life is his unquestionable love for trains.
Sounds like a depressing film, right? The surprising thing is that it isn't at all, unless one considers thoughtful-quiet depressing. It's a true comedy, with plenty of laughs but these laughs aren't at the expense of the characters.
It's a sympathetic movie, with terrific performances from Peter Dinklage and Patricia Clarkson and a great, uplifting spirit to it. "The Station Agent" is a film affirming humanity, and a pleasure to watch.
