Review of The Station Agent (2003) by Ben W — 25 Feb 2012
A hidden gem to be sure. this is what david gordon green really wants to be but doesnt have the writing chops so he stuffs his films with "pretty pictures." this film has the "pretty pictures" (though less of them because any more than it has would take the emphasis off the story and god save any filmmaker from doing that) but the story is so rich and understated that we appreciate mccarthys choice in backing it up with a somewhat broad but engaging story and nearly perfect characters.
dinklage is by far the standout here. his performance is spot on. cannavale is great and to an only somewhat lesser extent patricia clarkson. dinklages character is so well written and so wonderfully portrayed that he fills the screen.
I get sick of seeing the exploitation of of dwarves, midgets, etc. in so much of the media. this is film that finally gets it right in its portrayal of such a character. there is no prejudice of any kind while still being not acting like that aspect doesnt exist.
its refreshing.
