Review of The Station Agent (2003) by Adr? — 23 May 2008
There must have been an audible collective outcry from dwarf actors when it was revealed Peter Jackson wouldn't be employing anyone short to play hobbits, but rather resorting to cinematic fakery. Fact is, there simply is a dearth of good roles for dwarfs; you're relegated to being a punchline or a prop in a Jackass movie.
The Station Agent is different. While still much about Peter Dinklage's character and his experience with dwarfism and how it affects how he reacts to the world, beyond that is a soulful performance of a character who has been in large part alone all his life. Patricia Clarkson has long been a favorite actress of mine, and she remains fantastic here. Highly recommended.
