Review of The Squid and the Whale (2005) by Sarah G — 24 Aug 2008
[Joint Custody Blows] a poignant portrayal of two brothers dealing with the divorce of their literary parents in 1980s Brooklyn [its relationship to the films of Whit Stillman and Wes Anderson is uncanny...ONLY, in my personal opinion, BETTER]...the close-knit family falling apart is placed under emotional scrutiny via the utility of Super 16mm, mostly hand-held shots.
scenarios drawn from director Noah Baumbach's real-life experience: Original Screenplay nominated for Oscar in 2006 and clenched many WINS and critical acclaim (2005) with Sundance (dramatic direction, screenwriting, 6 Independent Spirit Award noms, 3 Golden Globes noms; and top writing honors from the New York Film Critics Circle, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, National Board of Review, Silver Bear, among others.
considered to have produced career-best performances from its ensemble, including: Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, Jesse Eisenberg, Owen Kline, William Baldwin, and Anna Paquin, among others.
What is American Independent Cinema? the Squid and the Whale [an allusion to a giant squid and sperm whale diorama housed at the American Museum of Natural History].
