Review of The Squid and the Whale (2005) by Lucas Y — 27 Dec 2008
At points I felt this film could be Best Picture worthy, but the ending was like a premature ejaculation. The Squid and the Whale had some of the best character development in such a tragic story that hits home in almost every family or at least a family you know of.
The 4 main members of the family were all equally believable. Anna Paquin had a nice part. Don't let people tell you that this is Wes Anderson-ish. It's not. Even though he's the producer, there's very little comedic elements to the film.
It's VERY serious, a theme Anderson uses sparingly but awesome in some of his films. There's really nothing special about the setting, cinematography or costume design either, all themes that Anderson does with EXTREME detail.
Altogether this was a film that had great potential, but didn't run out the throw to first. Just look at the runtime: 81 minutes, common.....
