Review of The Squid and the Whale (2005) by Jesse W — 06 Jan 2010
All the strife of Royal Tenebaums but without the whimsical quirks. This was painful to watch because you just KNEW a trainwreck was around the corner. Surprisingly, the ending, though abrupt and art-house, finishes with a light touch.
The young actors, Especially Feiffer, are fun to watch. Her face is expressive and her character fits the movie so well. Eisenberg conveys the teenage confusing and posturing well and Kline is the uber creepy younger brother, sending off a big ole Falcon "Balloon Boy" Heene vibe with his facial expressions.
I felt a little like an idiot when I realised at the end credits that I had been watching Jeff Daniels. Ah, well.
