Review of The Squid and the Whale (2005) by Chase W — 28 Apr 2010
I've heard about this film since it's release in 05' and had not had the chance to see it until I had happened upon it at a movie store closing. Described to me as the ultimate story of family collapse I began veiwing the film as a drama.
However for a film that was described to me as a drama The Squid and the Whale offers the snarkiest of indie dialogue and humor and I actually laughed out loud at certain segements. While at other times I felt as if I could cry, the film finds a competent pace as it is tell's a blisteringly sincere story and leaves no rock unturned.
Telling the story of Bernard Berkman (Jeff Daniels) , the eccentric and self-absorbed, once-famous now strugglinng novelist, His wife Joan (Laura Linney) a newly-discovered literary talent of her own right, with a bad tendency of affairs, and their two teenage sons Walt (Jesse Eisneberg) a 16 year old who hangs onto his father's every word and Frank (Owen Kline) a 12 year old with a scarred understanding of sex and a simple wish of a simpleton life.
if that doesn't let you know a little bit about what this film holds then I don't what would. This film is a must-see I can't garuntee that everyone who views it will enjoy it but I can garuntee it as being one of the most sincere films of 05'.
