Review of The Square (2008) by Mike L — 11 Aug 2010
Can't say I get the hype. Its noir angle doesn't really mesh with the Australian setting. The mystery is simultaneously pedestrian and more complicated than it needed to be. The meat of this film is in the performances, which for the most part are stellar.
David Roberts more than holds his own as the heavy. Unfortunately, this film lacks a true market. It's not interesting enough to be a popcorn flick, nor is it exceptional enough to blow the art-house crowd away.
It is a film that just is. Worth a rent if you're bored and in the mood for heavy-handed and dark.
