Review of The Square (2008) by Aidan H — 04 Sep 2010
Nash Edgerton's first foray into feature-length film bears all the hallmarks of the classic noir: a weak man forced into nefarious deeds by desire and an escalating series of mishaps that lead to his downfall.
By utilising his own skills as a master of surprise, Edgerton delivers the shocks while restraining the dramatics, leading his audience a not-so-merry dance along the way. Effectively understated performances from a mostly unknown cast give gravity to the plot (much like the Coens' cast for Blood Simple) which twists and turns like a good noir should.
A cracker from Australia's finest young director making his leap from short films with this satisfying and smart little movie.
