Review of The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) by Andrew C — 28 Mar 2008
Hmmm, I could never figure out why folks hail this as the best Roger Moore 007. Frankly I think it's the most overrated James Bond film. There's great set decoration and action scenes, a ski chase at the top of the film being one ofthe best. See, I think I've got what I like about Bond figured out. I like it when the film is plausable. This is, yet again, a fantastical action piece on an uber grand scale. Here, we are introduced to one of the most memorable Bond villains, just because of his look. Richard Kiel as Jaws. Big, menacing and has got metal friggin teeth. Bond's leading lady, here played by Barbara Bach is fantastic to look at, and next to nothing else. Much is the same with this film on the whole. 125 mins of eyecandy. Here, however, we get an image of Moore's Bond at his coldest. A welcome change for about ten seconds. Bond's Lotus is yet another example of the over the top nature of the Moore films. C'Mon, it's a sports car that turns into a fucking submarine. There's an underwater lair for another megalomanicacal (I think I spelled that right) villain with some wicked mean scheme. Not much else to say about this film. Not good, not bad. Just, kinda hangs there.
Peace!
