Review of The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) by Raji K — 24 Jan 2014
Roger Moore returns in what he says in the DVD commentary is his favorite Bond movie that he starred in and I have to agree with him. The Spy who Loved has a great locations from Switzerland to Egypt to the Vast Seas. It also has a great blend of action, villains and gadgets and features one of my favorite opening sequences in all the Bond movies with the jumping off the cliff Ski stunt. The action and espionage are really well timed and Roger Moore really has embraced the role and broken out of his shell as 007 in this movie.
Bond Girl - 5/5.
Barbara Bach is great as the bond girl in this film and for once we have a Bond Girl who has beauty, intelligence and can hold her own.
Gadgets - 5/5.
A watch that sends messages, a ski pole that can fire bullets, and best of all, the car. The car that can fire rockets, and serve as an under water submarine. This car will be hard to top and really is one of the best in the series.
Villains - 4/5.
Stromberg is brains of the operation who like all the Bond villains in the series have an insane plot that only could be conceived in a Bond film. Despite being overly wealthy he finds the human race to be beyond repair and decides armageddon is the only solution so we can return to our sea roots. Jaws provides the much needed muscle to this operation and really is one of the most iconic Bond villains in the series. His brute size and strength and tenacity really has not been seen since Oddjob in Goldfinger. Naomi as the sexy helicopter pilot was an added bonus.
Music 5/5.
Nobody Does it Better is probably my favorite song in the series. The song is just perfect for the film. The line/song title has a sense of confidence, but it is not cocky or arrogant, and the great chorus contains the name of the film.
