Review of The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018) by Yash B — 27 Aug 2018
2018 has been a pretty stellar year for the comedy genre, which is why I feel "The Spy Who Dumped Me" just feels unimpressive. I thought it was funny enough and I was entertained by parts of it, but it fails to stand out.
The jokes are very hit or miss but I did like the two leads, particularly Kate McKinnon. She steals most of the comedic moments and I laughed out loud occasionally, and mostly chuckled and smiled throughout.
A more personal reason I had to watch this movie is that this movie features one of my favorite comedians, Hasan Minhaj, is in a supporting role. I feel they did not give him particularly funny lines and it felt like wasted potential as he is someone I admire so much.
It's not the best spy movie spoof but I actually did think it had pretty solid action scenes. I also think the final act gets pretty ludicrous and sometimes becomes a drag. The movie is almost two hours long and does not need to be.
The movie is fun enough and fine for a one time watch, but its ultimately somewhat forgettable considering the other comedies from this year.
