Review of The Spy Who Came In from the Cold (1965) by Skip U — 03 Mar 2009
This may be the very best and most realistic Cold War espionage flick I've ever seen. It is relentless in its cold-eyed view of spys and the messyl, amoral business they are about. Richard Burton is fantastic as a dissolute Brit spy on his final mission.
The black and white adds to the atmosphere and the gray, dismal depiction of East Germany is outstanding. Not to be missed is Burton's rant on the amazingly ordinariness of spies with all their human flaws.
The pace might not entertain the younger generation with its need for contrived passive entertainment, but for thinking viewers this is about the best spy movie made, ever.
