Review of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015) by Evan C — 16 May 2015
After holding high expectations, I went and saw The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water at the theater, as I have been waiting for it for an entire decade. Straight from the Indiana Jones references, I knew that the humor I'd always loved from the show, which is still currently running since 1999, was going to get better and better.
The creators of SpongeBob, along with his writers, are one of the most creative teams I've seen since The Simpsons, and the characters are probably the second most imaginative besides Mickey Mouse. All of the voice actors are all individually unique, and of course, extremely talented.
The film opens with Antonio Banderas, who plays the film's initial, live action antagonist, Burger Beard, running on an island. After battling with a skeleton, he then finds himself on his ship, being greeted by his fellow seagull friends, who each in my opinion, share a good dose of fresh CGI, in which I expected to be cheesy and stupid, as props such as puppets are used in the TV series.
I wasn't necessarily impressed with the fart jokes I heard, as I did hear the kids laughing, they honestly weren't funny, and trust me, adults are capable at laughing at good ol' potty humor. I'm glad I didn't loose hope, because just as I expected, the film and its characters, made me laugh out loud, just like the show.
When it comes to goofy humor, SpongeBob has loads of it. In fact, the whole movie is goofy. Do to SpongeBob and Sheldon J. Plankton's cartoonish schemes go downhill, Bikini Bottom is turned into a post-apocalyptic world, and things do get brutal. Tires are smashed and bitten, boxes are stepped on. Gary the Snail, one of the most random characters ever made in cartoons, turns into the the all-hail king of snails. Believe me when I say, this is one weird movie, but you will not regret it, as SpongeBob delivers his humor just as well as he leaves us waiting for more.
