Review of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015) by Cindy L — 12 Jun 2015
It's crazy, and I don't think I fully understand it. So everybody's favorite sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea is still flipping burgers at the Krusty Krab. When Plankton makes a move to steal the secret formula, all hell breaks loose.
I have to start this review off by saying that I have very limited knowledge of the Spongebob universe; I've watched the show for maybe 5 - 10 minutes total in my life, and that is about it. Given that I watch anything that gets released in the calendar year, I gave this a shot, and I was frankly floored with how batshit crazy this cartoon is.
This movie is such an acid trip that I really don't know what to make of it. There's time travel, there's an apocalypse caused by an absence of hamburgers, and there's a talking dolphin with a laser on its head that watches over the universe.
I might be missing something, but is this really what kids should be watching? Shouldn't they be watching something that will help aid their brains and nurture them towards higher learning? This movie is sugar coated insanity, and I can't say that I believe that I fully "get" it.
It moves super-fast, as it is aimed for children that have ADHD burning through their veins. When the cartoon characters crossover to be live action, it's an odd, but welcome effect, because it comes in at just the right time, preventing a possible drag.
I know I am not the intended audience here because I am so unfamiliar with the show, but I am very confident that the children this is geared towards are absolutely going to eat it up. As an outside reviewer, I'm kind of baffled as how to rate it, because it's so stupifyingly different, so I will split the difference and go middle of the road.
