"The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" is a fun and colorful animated adventure that remains true to the spirit of the cartoon show. Sure, the whole enterprise is silly and goofy but I'm giving the second "SpongeBob" movie three and a half Krabby Patties out of five because I'm a fan of the TV show. The marketing for this movie mostly focuses on SpongeBob and his friends going to the surface and become mighty superheroes. They do become superheroes but only in the last twenty minutes of the movie. With a lot of zany jokes and a fine comedic performance from Antonio Banderas as the antagonist, "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" will not only please kids but also fans of the Nickelodeon cartoon which was first created in 1999 by Stephen Hillenburg.

As we all know, SpongeBob SquarePants (voiced by Tom Kenny) is a cheerful sea sponge who lives in Bikini Bottom and loves his job as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, he also likes to blow bubbles and catch jellyfish. His boss at the fast food restaurant is Mr. Krabs (voiced by Clancy Brown), he really loves money and he always places the secret Krabby Patty formula in his vault. Mr. Krabs' business rival, Plankton (voiced by Mr. Lawrence) has tried for years to steal the secret formula away from him but has failed every time.

After Plankton engages in a military battle with the Krusty Krab involving giant foods and condiments, he and SpongeBob fight over the formula but it magically disappears. Without the secret formula, SpongeBob can't make Krabby Patties anymore and all the customers go mad. Mr. Krabs still thinks that Plankton took the formula but SpongeBob is the only one who believes he's innocent so he escapes with Plankton by blowing a giant bubble. With Bikini Bottom descending into chaos, SpongeBob and Plankton must figure out a plan to get the Krabby Patty formula back. Their plan is to build a time machine, go back in time and get the formula.

Who has the secret Krabby Patty formula? It was stolen by a pirate named Burger-Beard (Antonio Banderas). How did he steal it? He re-wrote the story. He found a magical book that makes any text written on it come true.

The time machine works but they travelled far into the future as they encounter a magical dolphin named Bubbles (voiced by Matt Berry). Bubbles lives in space and his job is to look over the cosmos. When SpongeBob and Plankton return to Bikini Bottom, he smells the Krabby Patty scent and it leads to the surface. It leads to SpongeBob, Squidward Tentacles (voiced by Rodger Bumpass), Mr. Krabs, Patrick Star (voiced by Bill Fagerbakke), Sandy Cheeks (voiced by Carolyn Lawrence) and Plankton to go to the surface, become superheroes and stop Burger-Beard from launching a fast food empire.

Directed by series writer Paul Tibbitt, "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" is just as zany and trippy as the TV show and it serves as better family entertainment than "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2".
