Review of The Spitfire Grill (1996) by Natalie C — 22 Jul 2011
Pulling on heart strings from beginning to end, The Spitfire Grill heaps about as much pain and misery on the main charcacter, Percy, as possible. The film is made an enjoyable experience simply because each performance by the cast comes off seamlessly.
The predictability of the plot leaves something to be desired. I can't imagine many people were surprised by the direction or inevitable conclusion. The result is that all those yanks to the heart have a decidedly manufactured feeling to them.
I'm not sure I like being manipluated, but if I have to be, Alison Elliott's performance shined just bright enough to blind me from an otherwise below average film.
