Review of The Spirit (2008) by Daniel Q — 24 Jun 2010
Awe-inspiring visuals, and unique story telling are the two things that make this movie watchable. It's main deficiency is it's silliness. That and a weak actor as the main character. How is it that you cast a film with incredible supporting actors but fail so badly in the lead role? Gabriel Macht does nothing for the Spirit, other then provide a chiseled chin.
I thought Samuel L. Jackson was great as the Octopus. Also, I thought the story was rather interesting if you can follow along. The problem with the story is that it's hard to follow, and with the movies silliness, at times, you ask yourself, why even bother to keep up? Ultimately, if you do keep up, it's pretty rewarding.
It includes a super hero, and greek mythology story line, which is pretty original. Overall, the movie is weird but fun. Frank Miller serves up a Tim Burton type film, with great visuals, but little coherence.
