Review of The Spirit (2008) by J K — 28 Aug 2010
Don't let the hype and good reviews fool you, Sin City this is NOT. This film wasn't even in the same parking lot of the ballpark that Sin City is in. Surprisingly dull and predictable. Lacked the charm, style and stellar characters of Sin City.
Employed the exact same kind of pathetic comic-book style dialogue delivery and odd but alluring digital coloring technology that was used for Sin City but this movie was still lacking in the style department.
How the hell does that happen???? Maybe it was the fact Frank Miller decided to direct instead of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarentino. Hmmmm, me thinks Miller should stick to writing graphic novels.
The Spirit's other flaw was its primary characters were so grandiose and over-the-top that watching this movie made me cringe. Sin City's characters were over-the-top but Rodriguez was able to scale back the cornyness factor enough to make it watchable.
Samuel L. Jackson, Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johannsen's characters were simply dreadful. A horrendous mess and I was rooting for this to be good.
