Review of The Spirit (2008) by Jason J — 07 Feb 2010

This wasn't a very good movie at all. Having seen Frank Miller's name as director I thought it might be like Sin City and although the visuals were the same that's where the similarities ended.

The storyline and acting was dreadful with Samuel L Jackson hamming it up big time as the villain The Octopus. At times it was rather embarassing watching him. I'm not familiar with the comic book of The Spirit so I'm unsure if it's supposed to be a parody of the super hero genre or not but that's the feeling I got from watching this movie - it's full of cheesy one liners and over the top acting.

There's plenty of nice eye candy such as Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson. It's the film noirish look that saves the movie from being a total disaster - the effects are excellent. Ultimately though I was disappointed but maybe I was expecting a serious super hero type movie and all I got was a bad comedy instead.

Do yourself a favour - don't waste your time on this.
