Review of The Spirit (1987) by Joey G — 25 Apr 2010
For some reason most people hate this film, going as far as to commonly claim it to be one of the worst films of the year, if not the decade. But in a decade featuring so many films such as "Disaster Movie", how can someone seriously make that claim even if they hate this? Furthermore, the only reason I can imagine anyone legitimately hated "The Spirit" is because for some reason they had grown to expect another "Sin City" out of it, and instead got a campy, wild action-comedy that takes itself about as seriously as the original Batman television series.
"The Spirit" is what you get when you cross "Sin City" with "Dick Tracy" and the original "Batman" series, and then put Sam Jackson in the mix. Now if you want to see something serious or in-depth... Frankly, I do not understand why you would even consider the Spirit, because you are not getting anything like that. But if you like campy, silly, and some of the most fun you will ever experience? There is no reason to pass on this film. While "Watchmen" is the greatest comic book film of all time in this reviewer's opinion, and "The Dark Knight" is widely considered the most deep, well structured, and believable... "The Spirit" is by far the most enjoyable comic book film I have ever seen, and every subsequent viewing I have had since was just as spectacular as the last.
So, if you like movies that are simply made for you to enjoy them, and if you like campy? You would be insane to pass on this. But go into it expecting nothing but fun. Expect anything more, and you are going away severally disappointed.
