Review of The Spirit (1987) by Alex S — 04 May 2010
Before you get up here and crucify me for liking this movie hear me out.
It's stupid, I know.
It's campy, I know.
It's sexist, I know.
Everyone in the world hates it, I know.
But. I. Love. It.
The dialogue may be my favorite EVER, so funny so stupid so campy 40's noir it should be illegal, the action is over the top, the characters are crazy, the filming was really really cool, everything about the film is just (as Samuel L. Jackson states in the film) plain damn weird.
If you go see this movie please, THROW ALL EXPECTATIONS TO THE WIND AND TAKE IT WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. It fails entirely as a serious film, but is a very fun, visually appealing, campy popcorn flick.I think it is hilarious and entertaining and so stupid that it hurts but so stylized that it also makes me smile. It's fun if you just don't take it seriously and turn your IQ off, something I'm not often fond of doing but hey, I can make exceptions every now and then.
And because it has lines like "I'm gonna kill you all kinds of dead" or "free range chickens and their brown eggs piss. me. off." I adore it.
Ok now that you read the review you can proceed to crucify me, thanks for listening.
